Associate, Community Engagement

Position Description

CtD is looking for a driven and motivated project Associate to join our team full-time. This is an entry-level position, with a focus on supporting community outreach and engagement across projects. Preference will be given to applicants with experience/interest in city planning, transportation, urban design, and/or environmental planning.

You will be joining a close-knit, passionate team with an array of collaborators. We are committed to co-creation, collaboration, and social, racial, and economic justice. We are looking for candidates who already have experience in community engagement and participation processes and are excited about supporting Connect the Dots’s growth.

This role is local to Philadelphia and expects in-person work at our office 2-3 days per week.

Role Responsibilities

Project-Based Work (90%)

Participate in multiple projects in a highly organized, efficient, and collaborative manner: Support multiple small, medium, and large projects and keep multiple tasks related to concurrent projects organized. Clearly communicate challenges, updates, and progress throughout. Is able to adapt and shift plans as needed.

Support research and reporting: Research communities per project including identifying and verifying key nodes for community engagement and contacts lists for outreach and engagement activities. Analyze, write, and present projects and project findings (qualitative and quantitative data), with emphasis on community engagement results and impact.

Help to design informed and creative public engagement and participation processes, tailored to each project: Help to shape and implement innovative and tailored engagement strategies reaching diverse populations in a variety of urban, suburban, and rural communities. This includes drafting materials for engagement and outreach tools from focus groups to surveys to social media content and more.

Implement outreach and engagement tactics: Support the development and delivery of large-scale engagement methods (e.g. public meetings, pop-up events, Open Houses) and smaller-scale engagement methods (e.g. focus groups, interviews). This includes design, outreach, communications, logistics, facilitation, note-taking, communications, analysis, and reporting.

Business Health and Growth (10% of role) 

Contribute to the growth and evolution of Connect the Dots: Each new team member brings unique strengths that drive our development as a firm. We aim to align your skills and experience with our needs to shape your role collaboratively. This may involve designing innovative and tailored engagement solutions for diverse communities, as well as supporting internal research, refining best practices, and capturing key learnings, among others.

Required Experience and Skills

  • Outreach and Engagement Experience: Experience with engagement and outreach processes and confidence in developing, designing, and delivering workshops, outreach strategies, and mixed-methodology insight-gathering processes.
  • Organization: Must be highly organized with the ability to collaborate on multiple people, projects, tasks, and deadlines simultaneously. Must have strong attention to detail, especially within project deliverables.
  • Research and Reporting: Able to develop research tools (e.g. surveys, focus groups), and assist team members while designing those tools to ensure analysis and reporting requirements.  Able to efficiently and effectively understand data and develop research tools such as surveys and focus groups and analyze those for themes and key conclusions. This includes but is not limited to writing reports, ensembling slide decks and executive summaries, and other formats as required for share-back (e.g. video scripts, graphic boards).
  • Internal Communication: Must be a strong communicator, both internally with the team and with partners. Must be able to easily work with team members, ensure own accountability, enable collaboration, provide and receive feedback in an efficient, fair, and clear manner.
  • External Communication: Must be a strong writer and able to communicate with partners and the general public about projects in a clear and accessible manner, with the ability to distill complex information in a way that is engaging and understandable to different audiences. Ideally also a strong visual communicator / able to adapt communication styles depending on audience and intention. This includes but is not limited to writing reports, ensembling slide decks and executive summaries, and other formats as required for share-back (e.g. video scripts, graphic boards).
  • Collaborative and Independent Work: Able to work collaboratively and also independently in order to complete deliverables in a quality and efficient manner. Able to prioritize and complete tasks in both a remote/in-person environment, including work in Philadelphia and in other locations for non-local projects. Able to adapt to suit the needs of varying teams and work styles.
  • Creative Thinker and Problem-Solver: Able to co-create engagement strategies and tools with the team to best connect with communities and gather input. Able to pivot, iterate, and adjust plans as needed.
  • Community Building: Must be welcoming, open, and humble – able to build trust and relationships with community leaders and groups from different backgrounds and representative of the communities we work with.

Role Details

The role is a full-time, non-exempt position.

  • Annual Salary: $45,000-50,000
  • Tech and Wellness Plan: $1,200 annual stipend (3 months after starting) to support wellness and technical capacity needs.
  • Monthly Health Insurance contribution of $275 per month, group insurance option.
  • PTO policy includes:
    – 11 Holidays (4 Roving), as listed in the Employee Handbook.
    – 15 Vacation Days at base level, with an increase of 1 day per year of service (up to 5).
    – 4-5 days of office closure between Christmas and New Year.
  • Sick Leave: Up to 10 days per year of paid sick leave.
  • Performance & Development evaluation and learning opportunities.
  • Remote work flexibility; including policy for up to two-week remote work stretches upon approval and amenable timing.
